ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction: Team-Based Learning (TBL) is an active methodology that has shown to be effective for the training of health professionals. In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, TBL utilization migrated from the in-person to the synchronous online mode. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the perception of health undergraduate students about online TBL and to analyze whether there is a difference regarding this perception between groups of students with different levels of exposure prior to in-person and online sessions of the teaching method, in addition to verifying whether such perception can be affected by the student's behavioral profile. Method: This is an observational, cross-sectional, descriptive-exploratory level II comparative study with a quantitative approach, carried out in undergraduate Nursing and Medicine courses between September and December 2021. A questionnaire on sociodemographic data was applied virtually, in addition to the Assessment of Student Perception-Team-Based Learning (ASP-TBL) and the DISC Personality Test instruments. Results: Of the 241 participating students, most were females (81%), aged between 20.8 and 24.4 years, who had already attended more than 10 sessions of in-person TBL (90%) and online TBL (53%). Of the 24 ASP-TBL questions, 17 obtained an index equal to or greater than 75% in the sum of the answers "I totally agree"/"I agree", values considered as a positive perception in this study. Students exposed to more than 10 online TBL sessions had a significantly more negative perception in three of the four dimensions of the ASP-TBL, when compared to less exposed students. The group that had participated in more than 10 in-person TBL sessions had a significantly more negative perception in only one dimension of the instrument, when compared to the less exposed ones. The main DISC Personality test factor found among the participants' behavioral profiles was submission ("S"). There was no correlation between the student's behavioral profile and their perception of the method in the online version. Conclusions: There was a favorable perception of health undergraduate students regarding online TBL. Previous prolonged exposure to the method, both online and in-person, represented a significant difference in the students' perception of online TBL. There was no evidence of the influence of the student's behavioral profile on their perception of the teaching method.

ABSTRACT

Abstract: Introduction: Team-Based Learning (TBL) is a method widely used in the teaching of health promotion as it instigates the exercise of skills such as leadership, teamwork and decision-making. With the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a general need to adapt medical education to the remote environment. Thus, the objective of this article is to describe the experience of adapting a curricular component of Public Health to the online scenario, maintaining TBL as a teaching-learning methodology of health promotion, even during the pandemic. Experience Report: The method was applied through videoconferences and a platform with resources for the application of tests according to the TBL format. With the meetings, students developed essential skills about health promotion, such as salutogenesis, the illness metaphor during the process of getting sick, prevention and health education. Discussion: TBL develops students' skills such as teamwork, leadership and dialogue. These competencies are prescribed in the National Curricular Guidelines for undergraduate medical training, and are essential in the practice of health promotion. Furthermore, the discipline promoted a salutogenic construction of the students' capacities, developing skills based on their potential, just as in an operational group. Also, the application of TBL allowed the continued smooth teaching of health promotion despite the remote learning scenario, because this methodology encourages active learning and offers the possibility of applying the knowledge obtained in practical situations. The main limitations of the experience were difficulties encountered in accessing distance learning platforms, the limitations to non-verbal communication and the control over consultation materials during the execution of each stage. Conclusion: The adaptation of the TBL method to the remote scenario stimulated the practice of communicative and argumentative skills that are essential to the work with operative groups in the community and allowed students to apply the learned concepts in practical situations, despite the remote learning environment.

ABSTRACT

@#
Objectives: To determine if online team-based learning (TBL) is effective in improving knowledge outcomes and confidence about hyponatremia in its clinical recognition, classification, diagnostic work up, and management among fourth year medical students Study design: A quantitative evaluative design. Population and Setting: Fourth year medical students (medical clerks) rotating in the Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, University of Santo Tomas, Manila, Philippines from July to December 2020. Methodology: A modified TBL workshop is adopted in teaching fourth year medical clerks about hyponatremia. The TBL session was held with a group of medical clerks weekly from July to December 2020. As a pre-workshop preparation, the medical clerks were assigned to read ahead of time the clinical practice guidelines on the diagnosis and treatment of hyponatremia developed by the European Renal Best Practice. After reading it, they were asked to answer an Individual Readiness Assessment Test (IRAT) composed of 20 case-based multiple-choice questions (MCQ). The group was thereafter divided into 4 subgroups and asked to discuss the same MCQ-based exam and present it as a Team Readiness Assessment Test (TRAT). As each subgroup presented their IRAT, the facilitator discussed the underlying concepts for each question and its application in actual cases of hyponatremia. The facilitator then summarized the learning outcomes at the end of the TBL workshop. For team application (TAPP), the students created a concept map and formulated admitting orders. The medical clerks were then surveyed on their confidence in hyponatremia diagnosis and management during pre-TBL workshop, after IRAT, after TRAT, and after discussion with the facilitator. Statistical Design: Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the study variables and included the mean, standard deviation, frequency, and percentage. Within-group comparisons of different outcomes across the different timeframes were conducted using one-way multivariate analysis of variance (one-way MANOVA). Cognizant that the study has multiple outcomes or dependent variables which were compared at four different timeframes, multivariate analysis was utilized to minimize the inflation of family-wise errors (FWE). Results: Comparative analysis indicated that the mean readiness scores of the respondents after TRAT was significantly higher (t=–91.61, p=0.001) compared to the mean readiness scores after IRAT. Comparative analysis using paired t-test indicated that the mean confidence scores of the respondents in the recognition, diagnosis, and treatment of hyponatremia were significantly higher among the respondents after the IRAT (t=–24.26, p=0.001), TRAT (t=–34.58, p=0.001), and facilitator discussion (t=–42.72, p=0.001) approaches compared to the mean pre-TBL confidence score. The mean knowledge score of the respondents on the creation of a concept map and the formulation of admission orders of patients with hyponatremia was 25.54±1.98 (95% CI 25.26-25.82). Conclusion: Findings of this study are not to be interpreted as demonstrating a causal relationship. Furthermore, the results are only hypothesis-generating at best. The study showed that online TBL has the potential to be an effective method in improving knowledge outcomes and confidence about hyponatremia in its clinical recognition, classification, diagnostic work-up, and management among fourth year medical students. As a preliminary evaluation of TBL, further studies can be conducted to determine its effectiveness as a teaching modality in the medical curricula in comparison to the traditional method before being adopted as a teaching-learning activity. ABSTRACT

@#Introduction: Designing an engaging teaching strategy that enhances the clinical application of anatomy knowledge is important for effective learning. Hence, this study was carried out to evaluate the outcomes of team-based learning (TBL) approach on students’ learning during gross anatomy practical classes. Method: A randomised-controlled trial was conducted on 215 pre-clinical year medical students, who were divided into TBL and control groups. Both groups attended the same anatomy lecture before the practical session. The TBL group underwent three phases of activities, which were pre-practical assignment (Phase-1), individual and team readiness assurance tests followed by a debriefing session (Phase-2), and group application task (Phase-3). Concurrently, the control group received a reading material as their pre-practical assignment and attended a practical session in the form of an anatomy model demonstration. Pre- and post-practical assessments were measured 30 minutes before and after the practical sessions. The students’ cognitive engagement and motivation were also measured after the practical sessions. Results: The TBL group among the Year-1 students outperformed the control group in all the test performance measures. The TBL group of the Year-1 students was also found to have greater improvement of test scores compared to their control counterparts. The TBL group was found to have significantly higher cognitive engagement scores only among the Year-2 students. However, the internal motivation scores were not significant in both cohorts. Conclusion: These results indicate that the TBL session contributes positive outcomes to students’ learning in anatomy context.

ABSTRACT

For this second report, we divided the efforts of the University of Tsukuba into two parts. In the first part, we introduced the Interprofessional program, an inter-university collaborative educational program between the University of Tsukuba and Ibaraki Prefectural University of Health Sciences. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, this program was conducted using TBL (Team-based learning) in a large conference room. After the pandemic, this was conducted online (using Zoom). The main changes due to the online implementation were the following five points; (1) online faculty meetings, (2) advance distribution of materials, (3) testing using Google Forms, (4) group work using the breakout function, and (5) simultaneous editing using Google Docs. In the future, we would like to examine the possibility of new educational methods while creating innovations that are possible only through online interprofessional educational programs.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Team-Based Learning (TBL) is an educational strategy based on active learning which has become an important alternative pedagogical proposal in the context of teaching methods used in medical education. The aim of this study was to evaluate students' perceptions about the use of the TBL methodology in Medical School and to analyze the different aspects of the application of this teaching method. A specific questionnaire was applied to the students with 8 questions and dichotomized answers (Likert scale with 5 items). During the month of June 2017 second and fourth year undergraduate medical students underwent several sessions of teaching with the TBL method at the Municipal University of São Caetano do Sul (USCS) with focus on the following themes: sepsis; trauma; leukemia; colorectal cancer; and lung cancer. The sample was calculated on 193 participants considering a relative precision of 10% and a statistical significance of 5% for an estimate of 70% of positive responses (strongly agree and agree) to the statement "This TBL had a positive impact on my learning". The analysis was performed with descriptive statistics and the relative and absolute frequencies of responses with a 95% confidence interval for each estimated point. The use of the method was perceived as positive in aspects of preference (regarding the traditional expository class), motivation, satisfaction and learning. TBL stood out as an excellent pedagogical method for learning among medical students. One of the advantages was the ability to develop skills in clinical reasoning and the possibility of building knowledge with its practical use. The active method was thus found to be an important methodological alternative when compared to the traditional method.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Team-based learning is known for its effective and satisfying education methods in the study of various medical schools. This study was prepared to confirm the satisfaction of applying this team-based learning to the training course of emergency medical technician.METHODS: A total of 165 new members of the course of second grade National Emergency medical technician at 2019 were finally enrolled in the study. Data were collected with a self-administered questionnaire. The team-based learning method was organized with eight students per group to conduct pre-learning and then proceed to open book to encourage active discussion among individuals. The questionnaire consisted of questions about the satisfaction of the discussion process, such as whether the knowledge gained from the discussion was appropriate, and whether collaboration between colleagues was successful during the discussion, and about the benefits of team-based learning, how well knowledge transfer compared to existing lectures, and the replacement of existing lectures. The questionnaire used a Likert 5 point scale, and the data obtained were analyzed using the SPSS version 22.0.RESULTS: The overall rating of team-based learning was 7.8 ± 1.5 out of 10. Many students answered positively (88.5%) for benefits, while 87.9% responded positively to whether the knowledge transfer effect was better compared to existing lectures. In addition, the satisfaction of team-based learning was generally high, with more than 90 percent of education students giving positive answers to the replacement of other lectures with team-based learning.CONCLUSION: The learners gave positive answers to the satisfaction, usefulness and learning effects of team-based learning. Team-based learning is a discussion-based study, so it is a good way to improve communication skills. Since communication and teamwork are important in first aid activities, the characteristics of team-based learning could lead to improvements in first aid services, leading to high-quality emergency medical services.
